Introduction
YHC has been doing some sandbag training on the side and got nominated to bring it to the Saturday beatdown edition of The Current. Sandbag training is built off the Odd Object Lifting mentality, pushing our training regimen deeply into functional fitness. It is particularly effective for readying us for the demands that life will put on us.
Sandbags were on hand for all, ranging from 40 lbs all the way up to a 90 lbs sandbag that was rotated toe ensure a high suck factor was achieved. In total, nearly 500 lbs was moved by the studs of The Current
Seven men followed YHC into the gloom, stood on the line and chose the harder thing.
Condition

YHC mentioned that some men picked their sandbags, and some sandbags picked their man. Most of the PAX stepped way out of their comfort zone, with about half of them being their first time training with sandbags.
Henry Rollins wrote a short essay title “Iron and the Soul”, in which he describes learnings he has had while lifting iron (barbells). In it he writes:
”I used to think that [iron] was my adversary, that I was trying to lift that which does not want to be lifted. I was wrong. When the Iron doesn’t want to come off the mat, it’s the kindest thing it can do for you. If it flew up and went through the ceiling, it wouldn’t teach you anything. That’s the way the Iron talks to you. It tells you that the material you work with is that which you will come to resemble. That which you work against will always work against you.”
As YHC watched the PAX do work with those sandbags, YHC couldn’t help not thinking about this passage. YHC saw men learning while lifting those sandbags. Finding out new truths about themselves as they fought gravity. Refusing to give up or give in, even when given an easy way out. Choosing instead of stepping away from the challenge, they chose to go harder and picked up a heavier sandbag.
Rollins goes on to say “I have never met a truly strong person who didn’t have self-respect.” Today, YHC was honored to work out with 7 men who are truely strong.
