It was an honor and joy to be able to celebrate Scotland’s national day, St Andrew’s Day, with this great group of HIMs this morning.  I didn’t mention it during my ramblings this morning, but St Andrew was one of the first disciples, and on martyrdom, refused to be crucified on a regular cross, as he deemed himself  unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus, and instead was bound to a X-shaped cross (hence St Andrew’s Cross / Saltire).  He became the Patron Saint of Scotland around 800AD when on the eve of battle, and heavily out numbered, Pictish King Angus during prayer, vowed that if he was granted victory, he would appoint St Andrew as the Patron Saint of Scotland.  On the morning of the battle, white clouds forming an X shape in the sky were said to have appeared.  This gave the small army of King Angus great assurance that they were marching into battle with divine power by their side, and they went on to sweep aside the enemy.  King Angus was true to his word, and made St Andrew Patron Saint of Scotland.  The white X shaped clouds sitting in the bright blue sky also provided inspiration for the design of a new Scottish flag – white saltire on a blue background…..

As discussed in COT, there are no specific traditions associated with St Andrew’s Day – Hogmanay/New Years = PARTY, Robert Burn’s Day = Haggis & Whisky, but nothing specific for St Andrew.  One trait apparently associated with the Scots (when not battling and pillaging), is kindness of heart.  Taking that in hand, I would like to propose a new tradition for November 30th…. we should all demonstrate kindness of heart, and do something nice for someone else – make that person’s day better.
